Just as the ancient Roman Senate was hopelessly divided in the days before the downfall of the Republic, American lawmakers in Washington seem hopelessly locked in a major struggle over money that threatens the future of the American Republic. Elsewhere in the world, suffering continues. This week a major typhoon tore through the Philippines, killing hundreds and causing untold damage and suffering (see report below). In Egypt, attempts by the Muslim Brotherhood to take control of the country have led to violent confrontations
