Christmas and the timing of Jesus’ birth – Part 1 of 3

Hello! With “that time of year” upon us, I would like to discuss over the course of a few posts Christmas and the timing of Jesus’ birth.

As we look at the subject of timing of Christ’s birth, we should consider first what principles we find in scripture concerning the celebration of birthdays themselves. That is, in fact, what is being done in the “Mass of Christ.” It is a birthday celebration.

“A good name is better than precious ointment, And the day of death than the day of one’s birth” (Eccl 7:1, NKJV)

We can consider also the instances of the Pharaoh of Genesis chapter 40, and of Herod in Matthew 14 and Mark 6. Both of these occasions ended in tragedy. The day of birth is not as important, nor a time for celebration, as the day of one’s death. We understand this plainly when we consider the ramifications of this passage
