This past week the fractious United States government temporarily patched up its embarrassing squabbles over the federal budget, while the Germans are emerging as the real financial power in Europe. A searing heat wave continues to roast almost 30% of the southern part of the USA while thousands are dying of starvation in parts of Africa—and troubles continue to erupt in the Middle East.
